Icefield parkway and arriving in Jasper

I spent last night doing the laundry until 11.30pm and met some Israeli women who are on an equally big vacation. We did wonder why it was just women in the laundry room!
I cannot remember the last time I was at a laundromat and I cannot remember how Gilly, Anita and I did our laundry when we were backpacking. Maybe such a mundane chore is forgotten and just the fun and exciting things we did are remembered.
We left early and headed to the columbian ice fields where they do trips onto the Alabather glacier. We had to buy hats and put on all the warm gear we had (not much) and headed off. Really interesting to hear how they are formed and the fact that really shocked Ross was with global warming it would have evaporated over the next 80 years, possible within his lifetime. Whilst driving through the Rockies we have had a lot of discussion about erosion and the impact of man on the environment and what the countryside would be like when Ross brings his family in years to come.
The first pic is what it looked like 100 years ago, the 2nd as of today.

They take you to the glacier in these special heater vehicles and you are allowed out for 20 mins at a point where it is 300 metres deep,ie the Eiffel tower could be under you.

To give you an idea of the scale, the tyres were bigger than Ross.

We then headed toward Jasper and took in the Alabather falls.

Headed through Jasper to Pyramid Lake where are spending 2 nights. A bit sad but really excited as we have a little kitchen and are going to make our own food for the next few meals. A bit tired of restaurant food for a while. Broccoli and carrots, here we come!! Also Trevor excited as we are having a car free day and spending our day on the lake tomorrow. The boys tried it out this afternoon with a canoe for 2. Hoping to hire a boat for half a day tomorrow and take a picnic lunch to a beach at the far side of the lake.

Amongst the harsh environment of the Rockies are beautiful delicate flowers and Trevor took these whilst waiting for Ross and I in a shop.

The last picture of the day os Ross with the first totem pole we found.

Time for dinner and a nice glass of sav blanc - until tomorrow.
