A beautiful sunrise as it was 6am but at least Ross has perfected making a perfect cup of tea for me to take on the boat. As it was the last day we had to be back by 10am, so we had grabbed some goodies from the snack table -what temptation. They have cooler boxes and you fill it with flasks of coffee or hot chocolate and then snacks of fruit, beef jerky, cereal bars, cookies, chocolate bars and fruit but NEVER bananas. I learnt this the hard was as like a good mom on the first day I decided that sugary snacks were out and had taken a bunch of bananas to the horror of Duncan our guide who said they were very bad luck on the boat and I was told to toss them into the water and in fact I had put a bad hex on the mornings fishing.
We finally saw the sun shine and brilliant that the rain had stopped.
We put in a quick couple of hours fishing and Trevor hooked his big one. What a fight, we were all so excited, until Duncan spotted a dreaded sea lion. So strategically they let the line out and slowly and quietly directed the boat into deeper water in the hope that if the sea lion gave chase the fish would have a fair chance.
Finally clear Trevor recommenced the battle and after 20 minutes got the fish up to the side of the boat. It was a beauty, at least 50lbs plus, the excitement on the boat was tangible and then, with an insolent toss of his head, the fish glared at Trevor and spat the hook out of it's mouth at him. Flicked his tail and was off. Trevor was devastated, all he wanted was to get a picture, measure the fish and then release it. This means we will need to return to Langara one day.
We took some frozen fish and then fed the bald eagles to try and distract us for the fishing disappointment. On the plus side, Trevor does have a fishing story of note about the one that got away.
